Choosing Opencore SMBIOS

When selecting SMBIOS for your machine, it’s important to recognize that it goes beyond merely matching the CPU. Several factors influence how your system operates, as the SMBIOS plays a crucial role in managing CPU power, GPU profiles, USB mapping, and more.

CPU Type

  • Mobile vs Desktop vs Server, as this can greatly affect sleep and overall system stability.
  • Note: AMD CPUs do not need to concern about this

GPU Type

  • This is important when considering the Mac Mini SMBIOS, which is designed exclusively for mobile hardware and is not suited for desktop systems. For this reason, we strongly advise against using it, except for devices like Intel’s NUC series and similar systems that are built on mobile hardware.
  • For Laptops, Apple assumes that any SMBIOS with a dGPU will route all display outputs through it. This can lead to problems on Optimus laptops where external displays are connected through the iGPU instead, resulting in black screen issues that require additional patching to resolve.
  • CPUs without an iGPU need to pay very close attention, as features like Quick Look will be broken if the SMBIOS expects an iGPU (ie. Every single iMac SMBIOS).
  • DRM is also linked to this, although it can be resolved with THIS.

macOS Support

  • This is particularly relevant for older hardware, where macOS may still support the CPU but no longer supports the SMBIOS from that generation. A good example is Arrandale CPUs, which are supported up to macOS Big Sur, though iGPU support is limited to macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and earlier.

USB Device

Certain SMBIOS will have their own USB map which may attach to your hardware causing USB issues. Ensure to manually may your USB with this guide HERE.

HOW TO DECIDE

  1. Find the right CPU Generation and tier as closely as possible
  2. Then match up with either iGPU only or dGPU SMBIOS
  3. Finally decide on other minor things (like exact GPU and CPU)
The closer your hardware matches the chosen SMBIOS, the higher the likelihood of achieving a stable Hackintosh.

The iMacPro1,1 and MacPro7,1 are the only two SMBIOS options that enable the dGPU to manage all workloads, including background rendering and tasks typically handled by the iGPU. We recommend using these SMBIOS configurations if you are using a Desktop or Server CPU.

Additionally, this setup requires a Polaris, Vega, or Navi GPU to function correctly.
